Dr. Hu Angang is the director of Center for China Studies, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Tsinghua University, and a Professor of School of Public Policy & Management, Tsinghua University. He got Ph.D. in Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences (1988). He did postdoctoral study at Department of Economic, Yale University (1991-1992). Dr. Hu had been to numerous world famous universities and institutes as visiting professor or fellow, such as MIT (1997), Keio University (2000), Harvard University (2001), World Bank (2004), and Colombia University (2005). As a leading scholar on Contemporary China Studies in both China and overseas, Dr. Hu’s main research fields focus on economic development, social transition and public policy. He has published 9 author’s books, 16 co-author books, 9 edited books, 6 co-edited books, 5 English books. Dr. Hu has recorded 108 papers and has been citation 1404 times in Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index(CSSCI) during the year of 2000-2005.
Dr. Hu has important influence to China’s public policy making, as one of the most well-known policy advisers and Chinese economists to push China's reform and development. Earlier in 1990s, he propounded many important suggestions that had been adopted by the central government, for example, establishing tax share distribution system between central and local government(1993), reducing the disparities of regional development(1994), prohibiting the army of engaging in commerce(1994), creating jobs as most priority goal of economic development(1997), balance between social development and economic development(2000),new conception of development based on people-centred (2000,2004).
At the beginning of 2000, Dr. Hu founded the Center for China Study co-organized by Tsinghua University and Chinese Academy of Sciences. Now the center has become one of influential thinking tank contributing to China's reform and development, which make great efforts to contribute to major governmental research program and publish “Reports on China Studies” providing timely and high quality decision knowledge and information on China affair for leaders. In many fields like China’s development strategic blueprint research, public policy, environmental policy, regional development policy and trade policy, the center has brought notable influences to Chinese advanced policy-makers and the domestic society
