China's Mega-Events Moments:Looking Back at the Beijing Olympics, the Shanghai Expo, and the 2010 Asian Games

[2011-02-21]

Time: 3:00-5:00pm March 2, 2011

Venue: The Auditorium Hall of the School of Public Policy and Management, Tsinghua University

This illustrated talk will focus on the meaning of three of China’s recent high-profile spectacles, which will be interpreted as part of an effort to “rebrand” the PRC as a thoroughly modern country with state-of-the-art urban centers. To place them into perspective, the presenter will look backwards to comparable "mega-events" that were held in the United States and Japan when they were rising rapidly in the global economic hierarchy, and also pay more detailed attention to the Commonwealth Games that were held in India last fall. The speaker will draw on his personal experiences touring the Shanghai Expo, which he stopped in at several times over the summer, and spending time in Delhi, which he visited in October, right after the Commonwealth Games have ended.
