Abstract:
Technological advances, including online consultation and AI, are changing the human interactions central to impact assessment (IA), including environmental impact assessment (EIA) and social impact assessment (SIA) practice. This highly interactive workshop explores the intersection of emerging technologies and that most human of impact assessments, SIA. At its very best, SIA can foster sustainable social development, mitigate negative impacts and enhance benefits for local communities and societies. Historically, SIA relies heavily on in-person interactions between assessors and stakeholders through approaches including in-depth qualitative interviews, workshops, focus groups, ethnography and other, ‘people-intensive’ methods.
Today, use of digital technologies creates more SIA participation opportunities for diverse and distal stakeholders. Technologies may assist with access, collaboration and relationships. Creative formats may open new ideas and accessible means of engagement.
But digital technology can also lead to exclusion, loss of trust and a sense of alienation or disconnection. Digital information can be hacked or faked, and ethical protocols and standards can be challenging to monitor and uphold.
