Mr. Khalid Malik (age-61, Pakistani) is a development economist with extensive research, policy and practical experience. Educated at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge and others he has held senior management, substantive and operational positions in the United Nations, at Headquarters and in the field. He is presently responsible for the flagship Human Development Report and the human development indicators. Mr. Malik has made fundamental contributions to development thought and dialogue, and has long standing relationships with government leaders, CEOs, NGOs and the academic community. Mr. Malik is an active advocate of sustainable development policy, capacity building, interagency collaboration and strong partnerships with the private sector, civil society and the media.
Mr. Malik is currently Director, UNDP Human Development Report Office. Earlier, he was Special Advisor, UNDP (2010/11), on new development partnerships with the emergence of the Global South. Mr. Malik completed his position as the UN Resident Coordinator in China in early 2010. Before that, he was Director, UNDP Evaluation Office and Chair, UN Evaluation Group (1997-2003), and UN Representative, Uzbekistan (1993-1997). Earlier Mr. Malik worked as a Senior Economist and as a manager in UNDP, New York overseeing regional initiatives in Asia, science and technology activities in Africa and in Nepal. Mr. Malik conducted teaching and research work at the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (1975) and at Pembroke College, Oxford (1974-75).
