Lecture Content:

With Trumps second term, the EU is facing its most difficult period since its foundation. The economic, military, and geopolitical context is dark.EU Welfare states are under threat, and the European Green deal in danger. The EU competitive party system is losing legitimacy and authoritarian tendencies are on the rise. The impressive rise of far-right populists is favored by external influences from the USA and Russia but also caused by internal factors. A number of democratic innovations take place, most notably citizens’ assemblies selected by political lotteries among lay citizens, but they remain a niche. Will the EU be able to react and answer these multiple challenges?
