  • Hu Angang was born in 1953. He is one of the pioneers and leading authorities in the realm of Contemporary China Studies. He now serves as the Dean of the Institute of Contemporary China Studies of Tsinghua University and Professor of School of Public Policy and Management of Tsinghua University. He is also a member of the Advisory Committee for the Thirteenth and Twelfth Five-Year Plans under NDRC, a member of the Advisory Committee of the National Disaster Mitigation Committee and a member of the Advisory Committee under Ministry of Agriculture. He was elected as the representative of the 18th CCP National Congress in 2012.


  • Hu Angang spent his early year in the rural as educated youth. He started his studying after the resume of College Entrance Examination in 1977. Hu earned his Ph.D degree in China Academy of Science in 1988. He conducted his Postdoctoral research at Yale University from 1991-1992. He was awarded Honorary Doctor of Economics by Russia Institute of Far Eastern Studies.


  • Hu is awarded the Chinese doctoral scholar with outstanding contribution (1991),the Youth Entrust of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)(1994), the First Prize of Science and Technology Progress Awards of the China Academy of Science(1996, 1997), Third Award of the State Science and Technology Progress Awards(1998), Sun Yi Economic Papers Prize (2000), Fudan Premium Fund of Management(2008), the Second Prize of the 7th Excellent Research in Humanities and Social Sciences Research (2015).


  • Hu Angang’s publishment in Chinese social science journals have a very prominent influence. According to Baidu academic statistics, by July 2018, the number of cited frequency was 19754 times, with H index of 68, G index of 126. According to "(II) Economic List| Chinese Philosophy and Social Science Most Influential Scholar: A Research Based on Chinese Papers (2017 version) ", Hu Angang ranked fifth among the most influential scholars in economics on the basis of 6 indicators, namely number of total articles in core journals from 2012 to 2016 (TN), Cited Number (CN), Downloaded Number(DN), H-index, AR-index and number of highly cited papers.


  • Hu has continuously published series of contemporary China studies monographs, co-authored books and edited books. His latest works are 2050 China: Comprehensively Achieve Socialist Modernization (2017),China: Entering the Center of the World(2017), Contemporary China and China’s Development (2016), China’s New Idea: Five Development Concept (2016), China: Decisive Achievements of Century Goals (2016), the Grand Strategy of China’s 13th Five-year Program (2015), Super China (2015), New Think Tank with Chinese Characteristics : Hu Angang’s Views (2014), Collective Presidency in China (2013), China: Innovative Green Development (2012), 2020 China: Build a Moderately Prosperous Society in an All-round Way (2012)and 2030 China: Towards Common Affluence (2011).


  • John Thornton, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Brookings Institution in the United States, commented: Professor Hu has advised the Chinese leadership directly and is frequently consulted by a wide range of senior officials at both the central and provincial levels. The government has drawn on his expertise in drafting the five-year development plans that serve as the main road map for economic policy. Intense, analytical, and emotional, Professor Hu gives the impression of keeping a tight lid on a potential overflow of ideas and energy. He is an inexhaustible seeker of data and insight, always oriented toward the future. No Chinese thinker has a better record of predicting the pace and direction of the country’s development. When he is certain, he is bold. He is of the school that would prefer to be generally right than precisely wrong. He is probably China’s most versatile and pragmatic economist.
