On March 25, 2010, the Brookings-Tsinghua Center for Public Policy and the Tsinghua University School of Public Policy and Management co-hosted the Beijing venue of the sixth State of the Planet Conference. The global event was moderated from Columbia University in New York and co-hosted by the Earth Institute of Columbia University, Ericsson, and The Economist, with the support of the local hosts at four global venues, Beijing, New Delhi, Nairobi and London. Participants included some of the world’s leading experts on the issues of climate change, poverty and economic recovery. The expert panelists at Tsinghua University took part in the climate change portion of the discussions and contributed recommendations on the question, “What would it take to complete the climate deal?”
The conference included one local discussion in Chinese and one global satellite discussion in English. The first portion was opened by Xiao Geng, Director of the Brookings-Tsinghua Center, and Zhao Juntao, Senior Vice President of Ericsson China. Expert panelists for both portions were: Jiang Kejun of the National Development and Reform Commission, Qi Ye of Tsinghua University, Xu Jintao of Beijing University, and Zha Daojiong of Beijing University.
In the local, Chinese language portion, panelists took questions from the audience on their five policy recommendations prepared for the State of the Planet Conference. In the satellite broadcast portion, the expert panelists presented their views on the topic in a brief discussion with journalist James Miles from the Economist and took questions from the New York conference venue.
After the discussion, panelists in New York and New Delhi responded to Beijing’s recommendations and discussed their own proposals.
