On April 5, "Tsinghua Week at Berkeley" opened at the University of California at Berkeley. Following opening remarks from both university presidents, Professor Lan Xue, the Dean of the School of Public Policy and Management, delivered the keynote speech titled "Domestic Reform and Global Integration: The Evolution of China's Innovation System in the Last Thirty Years."
During his speech, Dean Xue briefly introduced the history of China's scientific and technological development, its relationship with economic development, as well as its impact in the age of globalization. He then discussed in detail the policies the Chinese government put in place in order to improve the research and development capacity of universities, research institutions and enterprises. Dean Xue concluded that China's reform has not only established a solid foundation for its Innovation System, but also provided more opportunities for cooperation with other nations.
Following Dean Xue's speech, Professor Jasper Rine of the University of California at Berkeley also gave a speech on "Looking for the Good News in the Human Genome" to an audience of over 200.
