On March 1, 2011, the Ambassador of Kenya to the People’s Republic of China, His Excellency Julius Ole Sunkuli, visited SPPM and met with Dean Professor XUE Lan and Assistant Dean MENG Bo. On the occasion of his visit, the distinguished guest speaker Ambassador Sunkuli delivered a lively and well-received talk on Kenyan-China bilateral relations to students from the IMPA and MID Classes of 2010.
His Excellency traced the bilateral relations of the two great countries from the Ming Dynasty to the modern period, noting the cordial meeting with Chairman Mao, and the establishment of official diplomatic ties in 1963. He mentioned more recently, that the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) was established in 2000, creating a platform for a free exchange of ideas and agreements. Ambassador Sunkuli especially emphasized China’s contribution in terms of the development of infrastructure in East Africa and the language and cultural exchanges in terms of the Confucius Institute at Nairobi University, Nairobi, Kenya. After his speech the Ambassador graciously answered a series of questions from the students, ranging from Kenya’s domestic issues, bilateral trade, Chinese aid to Africa, and the importance of cultural exchanges.
Ambassador Sunkuli is a lawyer by training from the University of Nairobi and took certificates from several different international courses in International Law. He was appointed as a Magistrate in the Kenya district of Kericho from 1988-1922, after which he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Kilgoris Constituency from 1992-2001. He later served as a private lawyer in Nairobi for all civil cases, and was appointed Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China in 2008.
