On October 23rd, Tsinghua University’s School of Public Policy and Management partnered with The American Society for Public Administration to host the 3rd International Conference on Public Policy and Management. The event itself was a resounding success. Prof. Weihe Xie, Vice President of Tsinghua University, and Prof. Kuotsai Tom Liou, President-elected of the American Society for Public Administration, both gave speeches welcoming the attendees and introducing important topics.
The central theme of the forum was “Chinese government and governance: a century of exploration and practice”. Professor Wang Shaogang, the Head of the Department of Politics and Public Administration at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Vivian Shue, from the Oxford Contemporary China Research Center, and Tsinghua’s own Professor Hu Angang, director of the Center for China Studies, gave the keynote addresses for the conference. The opening ceremony and keynote forum were chaired by the Dean of SPPM Professor Xue Lan.
The conference had a wide variety of topics, including public policy and local governance, crisis management, science and technology policy, land and housing policy, public service delivery mechanisms as well as many others which were fully discussed in 11 sub-forums. Participants came from all over the world, like the United States, Great Britain, France, Singapore, the Netherlands, and many others including Taiwan, Hong Kong, and mainland China. In total around 50 participants attended these sub-forums and gave talks about their respective papers. Tsinghua University Professors Xue Lan, Peng Zongchao, Shi Zulin, Wang Youqiang, Yu Yongda, and visiting professor Stuart Bretschneider as well as professors from other universities presided over the subforums.
This international conference is one of Tsinghua’s first series of centennial academic activities, and commemorates SPPM’s eleven years of excellence and important activities. The conference received more than 120 submissions for forum papers from both home and abroad, and after careful review, chose 50 of these for use in the conference. In total, more than 200 students, professors, and representatives from institutes both foreign and domestic participated in this important conference.
