On October 30th, our school’s MID students and teachers, under the supervision of Professors Bo Meng and Ciqi Mei, visited Mentougou District for a day’s visit and study. The teachers and students visited the district’s historical and cultural “Spirit Water Village”, Miao Feng Town, the construction of new countryside model villages called “Cherry Vale Village” and “Austin reed ditch”.
During that time, the Mentougou Committee Research Office’s Director Fujun Li met with MID students for an hour of discussion. Director Fu introduced the students to Mentougou’s extensive construction planning and development strategies in recent years. Fu told the students that coal mining used to be a pillar industry of Mentougou, but due to overmining many mining sites have been severely depleted. With the government seeking a more environmentally green approach to development, more that 270 coal mines in the area have been closed. This has led Mentougou to set up their own development strategy; first, to speed up the construction of a new city, namely a comprehensive service in the western Beijing district; second, to make the mountain area more livable and accessible, and third to preserve the mountain and its surrounding area. After showing the students around the area, Director Fu answered the MID students’ questions.
