Innovation Speaks through Technology and Ideas
--Lecture by Mr. Mike Chao, Managing Director of Dolby Laboratories, Greater China, Succeeded with Applauses
On the afternoon of Nov. 27th, the auditorium of the School of Public Policy and Management (SPPM) was packed with people, yet with strange silence at first until several rounds of “boom, boom, boom…” coming out from all corners of the room broke it and announced the start of the event.
Dean XUE Lan came to the stage, first welcoming the speaker, Mr. Mike Chao, other guests and audience from different schools and departments across the Tsinghua community. He introduced what brought everyone here to the event, that in this July, SPPM signed a scholarship agreement with Dolby Laboratories (Dolby), Greater China, to support an outstanding Ph. D graduate to pursue post-doctoral studies in a leading university or institution abroad, so as to foster future faculty for the discipline of public policy and management in China. Dean Xue thanked the support from Dolby and encouraged it to spread more of its innovation spirit and practices to Tsinghua students.

Then Mr. Chao delivered a talk titled “Innovation-Creating the Next Big Thing”. He shared both his personal and professional experiences in which what a great role that innovation played. He went on by introducing four lessons that help companies create great innovations, i.e. “believe in a better place, have the freedom to look for secrets, dare to take risks and find the right people”. During his talk, he asked his technology team to play two video clips that demonstrated the most-up-to-date world-class video & audio technologies, and the audience was amazed by the stereophonic sounds and vivid images in the video.

After the presentation, Dr. Ben Koo, Associate Professor from the Department of Industrial Engineering and Dr. Yixin Dai, Assistant Professor from SPPM, commented and exchanged ideas with Mr. Chao.

Mr. Chao’s talk aroused the audience who also interacted with him through sharp questions and comments.
Before the end of the event, the audience seemed to be still savoring the dramatic experiences of those demos that Mr. Chao and his team produced, and then one student braved to suggest the showing of one more clip. Again, the audience marveled.

In the end, Dean Xue thanked Mr. Chao with a special gift, a pencil portrait of Chao drew by a Tsinghua student from the Academy of Art & Design.

The event attracted over 200 faculty and students from across the university such as SPPM, the Department of Physics, School of Life Sciences, and School of Economics and Management.
