On January 27, 2015, the School of Public Policy and Management (SPPM) signed a memorandum with Medtronic and jointly established the “Tsinghua Prize for Research Papers of Health Economics and Public Policy” and “Medtronic Overseas Study Scholarship” to support research and study in the field of public health policy.

Since China started a new round of healthcare reform in 2009, the Central and local governments have implemented many new policies to different levels of the healthcare system, with different focuses shifting from providing comprehensive medical care and formalizing pharmaceutical rules, to improving medical and clinical service systems. These progress and changes have raised much public attention and put forward further demand on both the efficiency and quality of future reforms. Under such circumstances, Professor YU Qiao proposed cooperation with Medtronic and connected it with the school to design the research and scholarship programs, in order to enhance research and education in health policy and management.
As a Fortune 500 company, Medtronic manufactured the first implantable cardiac pacemaker in 1957 and since then becomes a leading player in health and medical sector. Apart from technology progress in its own area, Medtronic has also fulfilled its responsibility as a major corporation, vowing to “innovate for life”, to improve health quality of all human beings, and actively participate in China’s healthcare reform.
After the Agreement Signing Ceremony, Mr. Chris Lee, President of Medtronic Greater China and Vice President of Medtronic attended the SPPM 2015 Spring Commencement and spoke at the ceremony. Later, Dean XUE Lan and Mr. Lee exchanged the agreement to officially launce the program at the Commencement.
Mr. Lee remarked that “as a witness and a participant in the development process of China’s healthcare industry, I believe in the pivotal role that policy and management has played and will play. Medtronic is pleased to have a long-term partnership with SPPM, and is expected to work more closely in cultivating talents, promoting original researches in the area of health economics and related public policy.”
