On December 18th, 2016, the UN SDGs Forum, co-hosted by SPPM and International Development Law Organization (IDLO) was successfully held in SPPM, Tsinghua University. Ms. Zhao Baige, Deputy director of Foreign Affairs Committee of NPC, Mr. Patrick Haverman, Deputy Country Manager of UNDP China Office, Ms. Irene Khan, Director of IDLO, Mr. Khalid Malik, Special Representative of IDLO, Prof. XUE Lan, Dean of SPPM, Prof. YANG Yongheng, Associate Dean of SPPM, Prof. HU Angang, Director of Institute for Contemporary China Studies of Tsinghua University and Prof. CUI Zhiyuan were present in the forum.

The first session focused on the development of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and China’s development goals. Prof. HU Angang pointed out that the simultaneous designing of these two goals is of great importance for China to accomplish its first Centenary Goal of comprehensively building a moderately prosperous society by 2020. Ms. Irene Khan spoke highly of China’s contribution to the global sustainable development. Mr. Patrick Haverman gave a systematic introduction of the development of UN SDGs and its supporting theories. He also introduced some ongoing programs conducted by UNDP on SDGs. Mr. Khalid Malik made a deep analyze of the implementation of the 17 SDGs as well as the 169 further global targets. From the point of view of policy-making process and policy implementation, Prof. XUE Lan analyzed the difficulties of achieving SDGs in details.

During the second session, Prof. YANG Yongheng introduced the comparative study between SDGs and Human Development Index (HDI) conduced by his team. Prof. ZHOU Lize analyzed the the embodiment of SDGs in rural China. Prof. HU Angang introduced his resent research on China’s national conditions and put forward the opportunities and challenges China will face in implementing the sustainable development goals.
