On October 16th, the 1st “10 ？ 17 Forum” with theme on “Shared Prosperity Through Poverty Alleviation” was held at the Beijing International Convention Center, which is an important part of Poverty Reduction Day series events in China. With the guidance provided by the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development (LGOP), the 10 ？ 17 Forum is jointly initiated by Peking University, Tsinghua University, Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Institute of Sociology of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Research Department of the Rural Economy of the Development Research Center of the State Council, China Poverty Alleviation and Development Center (CPADC) and International Poverty Reduction Center in China (IPRCC). Nearly 300 participants from government departments, academic institutions, community organizations, enterprises, media, international organizations and relevant representative from foreign agencies in China attended the forum.
Professor Hu Angang of SPPM gave a keynote speech at the main forum. He stated the efforts and achievements made on poverty reduction since the founding of New China and the great contribution to global poverty reduction through a series of recent data. Meanwhile he indicated that the elimination of absolute poverty was the biggest challenge and therefore a task of development in China. He emphasized that poverty reduction was a national goal to the national development, and we need constant improvement on the mechanism of national poverty reduction in terms of strategies and policies, innovative Chinese anti-poverty mechanisms, and the development of regional economy in an effort to build a comprehensive well-off society.

At the closing ceremony, Dr. Chen Xu, Party Secretary of Tsinghua University made summary remarks. Chen Xu expressed warm congratulations on the successful holding of this forum and emphasized the importance of poverty reduction to the country. She said that Tsinghua University as an educational and scientific research institution adhered to the basic concept of "education and social services" in poverty reduction work. She hoped this forum would offer an opportunity and platform to discuss issues about poverty reduction and make more contribution to poverty alleviation in China.
