Prof. XUE Lan, dean of the School of Public Policy and Management, is appointed as a member of the United Nations University Council. 
 
3-4 May 2016 – Prof. Lan XUE was appointed jointly by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, as the new United Nations University Council member, and upon invitation attended the 65th session of the Council convened in Vienna. 

 
The United Nations University (UNU), established in 1973, is a system of international academic research with the right of self-determination under the authorization of the UN General Assembly. The mission of the UNU is to contribute, through collaborative research and education, to efforts to resolve the pressing global problems of human survival, development and welfare that are the concern of the United Nations Charter. To date, the United Nations University encompasses more than 30 research and training institutes and programs located all around the world. It has become an important global think tank and postgraduate teaching organization of the UN. 
 
The UNU Council comprises 15 members: the 12 appointed members and three ex officio members: the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Director-General of UNESCO, and the Executive Director of UNITAR. The 12 appointed members include the US ambassador to the UN Economic and Social Council, the former Permanent Representative at the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations, the president of the World Board of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI)’s European Chapter, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, the scientific director of the S?o Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), the Director General of the Delhi Policy Group etc. 
 

 
Prof. XUE’s new appointment as a member of the UNU Council is of great significance. Prof. XUE, together with other members, is responsible, for devising the principles and policies that govern the University’s operations, and for ensuring UNU playing a greater role in solving the pressing global problems that are the concern of the United Nations, its Peoples and Member States. Meanwhile, it also provides an important platform to promote active exchanges and cooperation between Tsinghua University and the UNU.
