The 3rd “Harvard-Tsinghua Workshop on Market Mechanism to Achieve a Low Carbon Future for China” was jointly hosted by Tsinghua University and Harvard University at the main building of Tsinghua University from June 2nd to June 3rd. This workshop was co-organized by the Center for Science, Technology and Education Policy (CSTEP) of SPPM and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard (HKS).
More than 100 renowned scholars, entrepreneurs and government officials were invited to conduct an in-depth discussion on promoting low carbon development. Li Ganjie, Vice-Minister of Ministry of Environmental Protection, Li Meng, Vice-Minister of Science and Technology, He Minghong, Vice Director of National Natural Science Foundation, Shi Zongkai, Vice Chairperson of Tsinghua University Council and Venkatesh (Venky) Narayanamurti, the Benjamin Peirce Professor of Technology and Public Policy and a Professor of Physics at Harvard delivered speeches during the opening ceremony. Su Jun, Professor of SPPM hosted the opening ceremony and delivered the welcome address.
Participants agreed that the sustainable development of human society is greatly constrained by a series of environmental issues, such as air pollution and global warming, which can only be addressed by building up a sustainable low-carbon development path. Great efforts should be made to establish a development path featured with low energy consumption, low pollution and low emission, to optimize energy structure, to protect ecological environment as well as to upgrade industrial structure. The goal of low-carbon development cannot be achieved without technological innovation, effective public policy and practical market mechanism.

Professor Su Jun of SPPM visited Harvard University twice in 2015 and discussed the theme and schedule of this workshop with Professor Henry Lee. Professor Lee expressed sincere thanks to the preparation work of SPPM and he called for a stronger cooperation between the two schools in promoting low-carbon development and research in public policy.
