SPPM and Schwarzman College Jointly Held Chinese Painting Workshop

On October 14^th, School of Public Policy and Management (SPPM), in cooperation with Schwarzman College successfully held a Chinese painting workshop at the meeting hall of Schwarzman College for international students. This event promoted the friendly exchanges between the two schools and marked a great beginning of a series of activities to celebrate the 16^th anniversary of SPPM. Prof. Xue Lan, Dean of SPPM, Ms. Meng Bo, Associate Dean of SPPM, and Prof. Cheng Wenhao, Associate Dean of Schwarzman College were present. The opening of the event was marked by graceful performance of a beautiful Guzheng melody played by Du Hanrui, a PhD candidate of SPPM. Fascinated by the traditional Chinese art, international students from the two schools enjoyed the beauty of Chinese painting and enhanced their understanding of Chinese culture.

Mr. Jiang Hongsheng (Jack), the founder of the Red Peony Academy, was invited by SPPM to teach international students how to paint peony by using traditional Chinese color pigments and soft hair brushes. Jack has rich experience in teaching Chinese painting to foreigners and helping newcomers to paint lovely peonies on their own. He taught students how to use brushes and water colors to paint petals, stamens, leaves and stems of a peony step by step. After Jack demonstrated his unique style of painting, students were inspired to follow the steps to create their own styles of peonies.

After one hour’s practice, over 10 students were selected to paint 16 peonies on a long scroll as a gift for SPPM’s 16^th anniversary. Shi Liu and Wang Hongshuai, two Chinese students of SPPM, wrote in Chinese calligraphy their best wishes to the school on behalf of all Chinese students on the left side of the scroll. Jack also presented his paintings and books as gifts for SPPM and Schwarzman College.
